Open Question: How do I set up my daughters desktop with wifi or wiMAX?

We just gave my daughter one of our dell desktops....When it was here at the house, I intalled a wireless card (Linksys) and the router and we had no problems...she was able to use our satellite internet on her computer.....now she is at school and has the desktop....her roommates are able, with their laptops, to pick up the signal from the college (approx 1/2 mile) away (they have WiMax on their laptops (I believe) Is it possible for me to set up my daughters desktop to have the same capability as her roommates in receiving the college signal? I am somewhat computer literate but am not sure of this situation and how it works...so the more details the better :) Thank you so much Dana P.S. when I search for the available connections, the only one showing is someones personal internet in the area....The search does not even show the college???
